Diet and child dental health

Child learning about dental care at the SKUSTO education center

Healthy teeth are important for children not only for a beautiful smile, but also for proper speech development and overall health. However, many parents do not realize how much of an impact diet has on the condition of their children’s teeth. From the first months of life, the food a child eats plays a crucial role in preventing tooth decay and developing strong tooth enamel. So what is good for children’s teeth and what is better to avoid?

Foods that strengthen teeth

Foods rich in calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, and other minerals are key to healthy teeth. These include, for example:

  • Dairy products – yogurt, cheese, and milk promote remineralization of tooth enamel.
  • Leafy vegetables – spinach, kale, and broccoli are rich in calcium and other vitamins.
  • Nuts and seeds – a source of healthy fats and minerals that promote gum health.
  • Water – drinking water regularly (ideally with fluoride) helps rinse the mouth and reduce the amount of bacteria.

Foods and beverages that are harmful

On the contrary, some foods and beverages contribute significantly to tooth decay:

  • Sweets and confectionery – sugar is the main food source for bacteria that cause tooth decay.
  • Sweet drinks and juices – in addition to their high sugar content, they often contain acids that corrode tooth enamel.
  • Sticky foods – such as dried fruit, caramels, or lollipops, which stick to the teeth for a long time and increase the risk of tooth decay.
  • Frequent snacking without brushing your teeth – even healthy foods can cause problems if consumed frequently and without subsequent cleaning.

How to promote a healthy relationship with food and teeth?

Parents play a crucial role in helping their children develop healthy habits. Below are some recommendations on how to encourage these habits.

  • Explain to children why dental care is important – through fairy tales, games, or pictures.
  • Involve children in choosing healthy foods – when shopping or preparing meals.
  • Establish a fixed routine for eating and brushing teeth – for example, brushing together after every dinner.
  • Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly – even preventive checkups help prevent bigger problems.
