Halitosis (fetor ex ore, fetor oris) refers to bad breath coming from the mouth, nose, or throat. It is a common problem that affects people of all ages.
Up to 90% of cases originate directly in the oral cavity. Odor often arises where food and plaque accumulate—in the interdental spaces, around overhanging or rough fillings, unsuitable prosthetic work, or in periodontal pockets. Tooth decay, periodontitis, infections, or tongue coating also significantly increase odor.
About 10% of cases have causes outside the mouth—for example, respiratory tract diseases, reflux, liver or kidney problems, or tonsil infections. In such situations, it is advisable to visit an ENT specialist. In most cases, however, a dentist can help.
Many people reach for menthol candies, chewing gum, or mouthwash, but these only mask bad breath for a short time. The real solution starts with proper and regular oral hygiene. Your dentist or hygienist will teach you the proper cleaning technique and select the right tools. The key is to clean the spaces between your teeth with the right size brushes and to clean your tongue with a brush or scraper.
