Removable space maintainer

A removable space maintainer is a special type of children’s dental prosthesis that temporarily replaces missing baby teeth. It serves to maintain sufficient space in the mouth for the proper eruption of permanent teeth. It is a lightweight and comfortable device that can be removed from the mouth (hence “removable”). We mainly use spacers when a child loses a tooth prematurely, for example due to tooth decay or injury.

Why is it important to preserve space for permanent teeth?

Baby teeth are not just temporary – they have an important function. They help the jaws develop properly and hold space for their successors, the permanent teeth. If a baby tooth is lost too early and the gap is not protected, the surrounding teeth may start to shift. This can lead to orthodontic problems such as crooked teeth or lack of space when the teeth are replaced. A removable space maintainer therefore plays a key role in preventing these complications.

Comfortable to wear and easy to maintain

We design the spacer to be as comfortable as possible for the child. It is custom-made based on a dental impression, so it fits well and does not interfere with normal functions such as speaking, chewing, or swallowing. In addition, it can be easily removed, making it simple to clean – just like regular dentures. Children (with the help of their parents) can easily learn how to care for the spacer.

A temporary but important solution

Although a space maintainer is only a temporary aid, its significance is long-term. A properly designed and used space maintainer helps prevent the need for more complex orthodontic treatment in the future. It is a simple but very effective solution that supports the healthy development of children’s teeth and jaws.
