Hall method

MDDr. Matúš Leitner

The Hall method is a modern, minimally invasive way to treat tooth decay in kids that doesn’t need drilling, injections, or removing decayed tissue.

The method was developed in Scotland by Dr. Norna Hall and has been gaining popularity in our country in recent years, mainly due to its gentleness towards children and high success rate.

How does the Hall method work?

During this treatment, the decayed tissue is left in place—without drilling or removal—and the entire tooth is covered with a precisely fitting stainless steel crown. This prevents bacteria and nutrients from entering, thereby “sealing” the cavity and stopping its activity. The crown is attached using a special cement that ensures a firm bond.

The entire procedure is very quick, painless, and usually does not require local anesthesia, which is a great advantage for children.

When is Hall’s method used?

This method is ideal for treating baby teeth in children who have uncomplicated tooth decay without nerve inflammation. It is most commonly used in the following cases:

  • in small children who do not cooperate during routine treatment,
  • in children with a severe fear of the dentist,
  • in cases of multiple tooth decay,
  • as part of the overall dental care plan for pediatric patients.

The method is not suitable for permanent teeth or teeth with deep decay affecting the nerve.

Advantages of the method

One of the main advantages is its gentleness—children usually tolerate the treatment very well because it is completely painless, without drilling or injections.
Other benefits include:

  • High success rate and long-term tooth protection
  • Simple and quick procedure (often completed in a single visit)
  • Minimized stress and fear of dental treatment
  • Lower risk of complications than with traditional drilling

The Hall method is therefore an ideal solution for young patients who are afraid or unable to cooperate for long periods of time in the dentist’s office.

Silver application (SDF)

Silver application (SDF) is a quick and non-invasive method that stops both early and advanced tooth decay. The solution is applied directly to the affected area, significantly slowing down or completely stopping the decay. It is painless and particularly suitable for children or in cases where a traditional filling cannot be done immediately. The only disadvantage is that the treated area darkens, but this does not affect its function.

Sealing fissures

Sealing fissures is a preventive procedure in which deep grooves on molars are sealed with a thin layer of protective resin. This prevents plaque from accumulating in areas that are difficult to clean. This significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay. The procedure is quick, gentle, and painless.

Extended fissure sealing

Preventive fillings/extended sealing are used on teeth where the enamel in the fissure is already slightly damaged, but it is not yet a classic cavity. The groove is gently micro-invasively adjusted and filled with a small amount of filling material. This stabilizes the tooth and prevents further decay. It is a quick and gentle way to catch the problem at its very beginning.

Halls crown

The Hall crown is a stainless steel crown for children that can be placed on a decay-weakened temporary tooth without drilling or injections. The crown seals the tooth and stops further decay, as bacteria lose access to their food source. It is a quick, gentle, and well-tolerated treatment. It helps preserve the milk tooth until it is naturally replaced.
