Early childhood caries (ECC)

Early childhood caries (ECC) affects young patients up to 71 months of age (children under 6 years of age). It is also known as honey bottle tooth decay or sweet sleep tooth decay. It is particularly dangerous due to its rapid progression and frequent occurrence on multiple teeth. The upper incisors are often among the first teeth to be affected, followed by the first primary molars. The lower incisors, on the other hand, are not often affected due to the protective effect of saliva.
What does decay look like?
Early childhood caries initially develops on the neck of the tooth as demineralization (decalcification manifested by a white spot on the tooth). However, at this stage, parents often do not notice it due to poor dental hygiene, insufficient cleaning of their children’s teeth, and a larger amount of dental plaque. The decay then spreads circularly until it encircles the entire crown of the tooth and also spreads towards the edge of the tooth. A tooth destroyed by decay in this way is so weakened that it often breaks off when biting into food. These young patients then come to us with only the roots remaining in their mouths, which we often have no chance of treating and saving.

How can this be prevented?
To prevent tooth decay, we must focus on thorough dental hygiene. We always clean our children’s teeth thoroughly, cleaning them from all sides with circular movements, both in the morning and in the evening. After brushing their teeth in the evening, we do not give children anything to drink other than water. We never dip pacifiers in honey, juice, or similar substances. Regular preventive checkups (twice a year) allow us to detect problems early on and prevent them from progressing.
Excess sugars
The diet of a child under two years of age consists mainly of carbohydrates (milk, fruit, rice, potatoes), so it is not recommended to add additional sugars and sweets to the child’s diet. If we want to treat an older child to something tasty, we prefer cake/muffins, and it is best to always combine this dessert with a main meal. On the other hand, we avoid candies, lollipops, and other sweets that are sticky and are often given throughout the day. We also pay attention to frequent consumption of sweet drinks.

The solution is applied directly to the affected area, significantly slowing down or completely stopping the decay. It is painless and particularly suitable for children or in cases where a traditional filling cannot be done immediately. The only disadvantage is that the treated area darkens, but this does not affect its function.

Sealing fissures
Sealing fissures is a preventive procedure in which deep grooves on molars are sealed with a thin layer of protective resin. This prevents plaque from accumulating in areas that are difficult to clean. This significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay. The procedure is quick, gentle, and painless.

Extended fissure sealing
Preventive fillings/extended sealing are used on teeth where the enamel in the fissure is already slightly damaged, but it is not yet a classic cavity. The groove is gently micro-invasively adjusted and filled with a small amount of filling material. This stabilizes the tooth and prevents further decay. It is a quick and gentle way to catch the problem at its very beginning.

The Hall crown is a stainless steel crown for children that can be placed on a decay-weakened temporary tooth without drilling or injections. The crown seals the tooth and stops further decay, as bacteria lose access to their food source. It is a quick, gentle, and well-tolerated treatment. It helps preserve the milk tooth until it is naturally replaced.
